a town in Dorset in southern England with a long history. Nearby Maiden Castle was occupied at least 4 000 years ago, and there was a Roman town, Durnovaria, where Dorchester now stands. In the 19th century, the Tolpuddle Martyrs were put on trial in Dorchester and the author Thomas Hardy was born there.
