    CultureIn the late 19th century the Apaches, under such leaders as Cochise and Geronimo, were the last Native Americans to be defeated by the US Cavalry. Today many Apaches live on reservations (= areas of land given and protected by the US government) in the states of Arizona and New Mexico and there are also communities in Texas and Oklahoma.
    Word Originfrom Mexican Spanish, probably from Zuni Apachu, literally ‘enemy’.
