Word Originlate Middle English: via late Latin from New Testament Greek mamōnas (see Matt. 6:24, Luke 16:9–13 in the Bible), from Aramaic māmōn ‘riches’. The word was taken by medieval writers as the name of the devil of covetousness, and revived in this sense by the English poet Milton.
