Word OriginOld English cherubin, ultimately (via Latin and Greek) from Hebrew kěrūb̲, plural kěrūb̲īm. A rabbinic folk etymology, which explains the Hebrew singular form as representing Aramaic kě-rab̲yā ‘like a child’, led to the representation of the cherub as a child.
