They have become very popular in the US and in Britain because many people like to buy food from small local producers, partly because of environmental worries about transporting food from thousands of miles away and also because they like to support producers in their own area. In the US some farmers' markets are wholesale markets where, for example, farmers who grow fruit in California sell to firms from the north-eastern states.
